At Hartlepool, we are a branch of Cleveland Family History Society which was formed in 1980 for people interested in family history in the South Durham and North Yorkshire areas. The South Durham area extends just to the north of Hartlepool and across to Teesdale. In Yorkshire it takes in most of the old North Riding.
It is a very varied area, from the agricultural Durham and Yorkshire Dales and Moors, to the industrial areas around the River Tees, Darlington and Hartlepool. In Victorian times many, many people came into these populated areas from country communities in search of work.
Cleveland Family History Society publishes a quarterly journal full of members’ articles, genealogical information and is where you could well find others researching the same name as you. There is a website with an extensive shop selling transcripts of parish registers, monumental inscriptions etc.
In addition, the main Cleveland Family History Society has a forum where members can find further information, ask for help from others and perhaps answer questions.
